Overview
Constant stiff neck, pointy pain that radiates down the shoulders and mysterious numbness in the arms can be extremely upsetting. This neck is extremely delicate and complex, between your head and body, and you don't feel comfortable, which leads to you feeling anxious. Therefore, when your doctor has referred you for an MRI of the Neck (also called Cervical Spine MRI) you are taking a positive step toward finding some answers. An x-ray scan is a completely painless, non-invasive and very safe procedure, it might sound frightening. It's the most effective way to bring a positive light to your symptoms, and stop your suffering.
What is an MRI of the Neck Test?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an amazing scientific discovery in the field of diagnosis. This powerful piece of equipment combines a powerful magnetic field and special radio frequency, rather than relying on X-ray or even harmful, ionizing radiation.
When targeted at one's neck/throat, this technology produces precisely clean, multi-dimensional slices of the body. It makes it possible for your doctor to see right through the bone to closely examine the delicate spinal cord, intervertebral discs, nerve roots, spinal fluid and adjacent muscles, which are not visible on a conventional X-ray or computed tomography (CT) scan.
What Should I Expect in the Examination Room during MRI Neck Test?
Safety Requirements: Safety requirements must be followed as there is a large magnet in the machine. There will be no removal of all metallic objects, such as hair clips, earrings, necklaces, hearing aids etc. a comfortable, non-metallic gown will be provided.
The setup: You will be lying on a motorised and cushioned table flat on your back. A specially designed coil (receiver coil) will be very carefully placed around your head and neck. This is an antenna that is designed to get the best possible image.
Slide into Scanner: The table will slowly move into the scanner. There is only one rule you have to keep in mind: No movement! The machine will make loud tapping, thumping and whirring noises. Ear pieces will be given, or a headset will be available for your enjoyment, to make you feel at ease.
Time: This is a very relaxed session, and is usually complete in 30 to 45 minutes.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Will my head be strapped down?
Not at all. The head coil will merely gently hold you in place, it will never be strapping you down, locking you down, or restraining you.
Will I have a contrast dye put into my neck?
No. Contrast is used to help visualize inflammation, and is painless and is introduced into your arm or hand through a normal IV line.
Do I have to hold my breath like in a chest scan?
MRIs of the neck do not require you to hold your breath. One has to take a normal breath and swallow as little as possible.
