Read our detailed guide on the PET CT scan procedure. Learn what to expect before, during, and after the scan to prepare for your diagnostic imaging test.
Overview
A PET CT scan is one of the cutting-edge techniques in diagnostic imaging which is involved in identification, diagnosis, and monitoring of various health problems including cancers, heart disease, disorders of the nervous system, as well as some infections. In addition to basic information provided by Computed Tomography (CT), doctors obtain information using Positron Emission Tomography (PET).
At Ganesh Diagnostic and Imaging we aim to provide a comfortable and stress-free experience for all our patients. Understanding the details of PET CT scan facilitates lowering anxiety and ensures being properly prepared for an appointment.
What to do before the PET CT Scan?
The careful preparation is crucial for getting accurate scans done. Your doctor will give you specific instructions about your health status, and you may need to follow them thoroughly.
Most people need to stop eating 4-6 hours before the scan. It is good to drink water, but food and drinks that contain sugar as well as coffee and tea should not be consumed unless stated otherwise.
Also, it is important to mention to the radiology professionals if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or have any allergies, or if you have undergone any surgery or treatment in the last day or two.
Patients who have diabetes need to pay additional attention.
They should inform the healthcare providers about any medicines they are taking so that professionals can help them with the preparation as well.
What is the procedure for PET CT Scan?
Step 1: Patient Logistics and Review of Medical Information
Upon arrival at Ganesh Imaging, our personnel will handle registration and the examination of your medical information. They will gather details related to your symptoms, past imaging investigations, any treatment that you are presently receiving, along with any allergic reactions you may have had and medications that you are presently on. The collected details will contribute to the proper and safe results.
Step 2: Injection of Radioactive Tracer
A small dose of radioactive tracer will be injected into a vein (in most cases arm vein), which consists of a glucose that will be detected by active cells.
Only a low radiation dosage is used, which is safe for the majority of patients.
After the injection, you will need to rest for approximately 45 to 60 minutes before the scan.
Step 3: The PET CT Scan
After the tracer has been used, you will be taken into the scan room.
You will lie on a motorized scan table known as a PET CT scanner. The machine has a round hole in the centre and does not enclose your body entirely which adds to the patient's comfort.
During the scan, it is extremely important to be still.
· Initially, a CT scan will be performed.
· Then comes the PET scan.
· In the end, the resultant image is created by both CT and PET scans.
· Usually, the entire procedure lasts from 20 to 40 minutes.
This procedure is painless as the machine does not come into contact with your body.
Step 4: After the Scan
It is advisable to continue your daily life after completing the scan.
