What is an X-Ray, Its Uses, Types and Risks

An X-Ray is a diagnostic imaging technique which produces scan images of the internals of the body and represent the bones, soft tissues and organs of the body, we will discuss about the x rays, its uses, its types, the risks...

An X-ray is also known as a radiograph in medicine. A radiograph is a picture of your body and its bones, soft tissue and organs which can help your doctor to detect and diagnose certain conditions, helping in the treatment planning. Mostly an X-ray is ordered to look for a fractured bone. X-ray is generally a safe and effective method to evaluate your health.

What Are the Different Types of X-Rays?

There are several ways to take an Xray. Different types of x-rays are used for different areas of the body. Some x easy might use a radioactive contrast dye which helps produce a clearer image. Some of the common x ray types are-

  • Abdominal x-ray-  when an x ray is done for the abdominal area it is known as an abdominal x ray. It shows kidneys, bladder, liver, adrenals, uterus etc. kidney or bladder stones can be appreciated in this scan. There are certain special kinds of abdominal x-rays such as barium enema which uses special barium dyes to produce more clear images of the digestive system.
  • Chest x-ray- when an x-ray is taken for a chest region, it is known as a chest x-ray. It can be used to diagnose conditions related to the lungs, heart, bones etc for example pneumonia in lungs.
  • Fluoroscopy- A fluoroscopy is an imaging technique which can show moving images of your internal organs and soft tissues. It can be used to examine gastrointestinal x-rays.
  • Mammography- It is an x-ray technique used to picture the breasts in the images to diagnose them for conditions such as breast cancer, lumps etc.
  • Computed tomography (CT)-  in a  CT scan, cross sectional view of the internal organs of the body are crested. It represents the bones, organs and tissues. The CT machine is a donut shaped machine.
  • Dental x-ray-  A teeth x-ray helps your dentist to look for any abnormality occurring in your head and neck region such as cavities, cysts, tumours, fractures etc. which helps your doctor to evaluate and produce an effective treatment plan.
  • Bone x-ray- A bone x-ray might be ordered to detect and determine broken bones (fractures), dislocated joints etc. it can be used to determine certain joint conditions such as arthritis. Cancer signs can also be appreciated in a bone x-ray.

Why is X-ray done?

X-ray can be used to determine various conditions such as-

  • Bone disorders and lesions- such as fractures, some conditions such as osteoporosis, cherubism, to determine bone density, bone infections such as arthritis.
  • To look for any cancer evidence for example, bone cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer etc.
  • To examine blood vessels, for vessel problems such as aneurysms as in aortic aneurysm (Bulging Aorta)
  • It can show diagnostic symptoms for congestive heart failure
  • Any blockage in the bowel can be seen
  • Cavities or tooth decay, and previous fillings, tooth fracture can be visualised
  • It can be used to check and verify for positioning wires, leads, tubes after any surgical procedure
  • For detection of any foreign object such as in accidental swallowing of any item by a child.
  • For evaluation and treatment planning
  • To identify the cause for pain, swellings etc

How to Prepare for an X-Ray?

You need to keep certain things in mind before going an x-ray some of them are mentioned below-

  • You should bring your doctor's prescription for getting an x-ray
  • If you have had an x-ray before of the same concerned area, kindly bring that along
  • If you suspect that you are pregnant, you should tell your doctor
  • If you are allergic to any material or if you had undergone a contrast based x ray and you developed allergic reaction, you should tell your doctor beforehand
  • You will be asked to remove your jewellery like earrings, dental prosthesis, eyeglasses, nose rings etc, better to leave them at home.
  • You might be asked to change your clothes into a hospital gown if you are wearing embellished clothes.
  • Other specific instructions are given by your doctor or the health care provider before the scan only

What Are The Risks of X-Ray?

Generally the benefits and aid that an x-Ray provides are greater than the risks it poses. The x-rays are conducted by a trained professional and under the safety guidelines. Although the x-ray system uses ionising radiation, the likeliness of it causing side effects rhymes low. There are certain x-rays that use higher doses of radiation than a plain x-ray,such as a CT scan and angiography. But the chances of getting some serious health related problems are still less. If you still get worried, you can always get yourself consulted by the doctor. You should get an x-ray only if necessary and  when recommended by your doctor. For children there can be alternatives of x-ray such as ultrasound. If you are pregnant, you should not undergo x-ray imaging because the unborn child is more susceptible to the ionising radiation, unless it is to be done for the foetus itself. However, it can be done by taking necessary precautive measures such as to avoid exposing the mothers abdomen, providing other lead based shields for the areas not getting exposed.

You might face some side effects if you had a contrast based x-ray such as-

What is the Price of an X-Ray?

The cost of an x-ray depends on the type of x-ray, the region for which the x-ray is being conducted and the location where you live. It generally varies from as low as 500 for a small x-ray and can go as high as 5000-10000 for a bigger x-ray like CBCT, CT scan etc. There are certain diagnostic centres which offer tests at reasonable price.
