MRI Scan Procedure: What Happens Step by Step

MRI Scan Procedure: What Happens Step by Step

See what happens at each stage of an MRI scan, from safety checks and positioning to scan time, noise and finishing up.

An MRI procedure has four steps: a safety check, getting into position on the scan table, the scan itself with loud knocking noises, and a quick finish. Most MRI scans take 20 to 45 minutes, and you can usually go home right after.

Stage 1: Safety Screening

You first complete a safety questionnaire about implants, previous surgery, pacemakers, pregnancy and allergies. You change into a gown, leave your phone, cards, keys and jewellery in a locker, and may walk through a metal detector. This protects you, since the magnet is always on. See MRI safety.

Stage 2: Positioning

The technologist helps you lie on a padded table, either head first or feet first. A device called a coil is placed over the area to be scanned, such as the knee, head or spine. Pillows and straps support you so you can stay still. You receive earplugs or headphones and a squeeze bulb to call for help. See MRI brain or MRI knee for body-part details.

Stage 3: The Scan

The table slides into the magnet. The machine then takes several sets of pictures, each lasting 2 to 5 minutes. You will hear loud tapping, buzzing and knocking sounds. This is normal. It happens because the magnetic coils switch on and off quickly. Stay still and breathe normally. For scans of the chest or abdomen, you may need to hold your breath for 10 to 20 seconds. See why MRI is noisy.

Stage 4: Contrast and Finish

If contrast is needed, a small injection is given in the middle of the scan through a cannula placed in your arm. You may feel mild coldness. After the last set of images, the table slides out and the cannula is removed. See MRI with contrast.

Tips to Stay Comfortable

  • Use the toilet before you start.
  • Close your eyes if the tunnel feels tight, and breathe slowly.
  • Ask for a blanket if you feel cold.
  • Focus on counting breaths or listening to the music if offered.

A Practical Example

Priya, 38, has a lumbar spine MRI for back pain. She changes into a gown, lies on her back with a pillow under her knees, and the technologist places a coil on her lower back. The scan runs for 30 minutes with a short break between sets. She holds the bulb in her hand but does not need it. She leaves right after and collects her report the next day.

After the Scan

You can eat, drive and return to work, unless sedation was used. If you had contrast, drink extra water. A radiologist reviews the images and prepares a report. Read how to read your MRI report and what an MRI scan is.

Quick Summary: MRI Procedure in Five Points

  • Complete a safety form and remove all metal.
  • Lie on the table while the technologist positions a coil.
  • Wear earplugs and keep still.
  • The scan takes 20 to 45 minutes in most cases.
  • You can leave right after the scan, unless you were sedated.

Remember that the technologist can see you all the time and hear you through the intercom. If you feel pain, dizziness or panic, speak up immediately. Read MRI with contrast if your doctor has mentioned an injection, and MRI preparation for the checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an MRI scan take?

Most take 20 to 45 minutes. Some body parts need longer.

Is an MRI scan painful?

No. You only lie still. The noise is the main discomfort.

Do I have to stay completely still?

Yes. Movement blurs the images and may require repeat sequences.

What if I need to stop the scan?

Squeeze the call bulb or speak through the intercom. The technologist can pause the scan.

Can I listen to music during the scan?

Many centres offer headphones with music.

Will I be alone in the room?

The technologist watches you through a window and talks to you by intercom.

Why are earplugs given?

The machine is loud. Earplugs protect your hearing.

Can I drive home after an MRI?

Yes, unless you were sedated.

When will I get the MRI report?

Usually within 24 to 48 hours.
