MRI Brain Scan: Uses, Preparation and Results

MRI Brain Scan: Uses, Preparation and Results

An MRI brain scan shows detailed pictures of brain tissue. Learn why it is done, how to prepare, what it can detect and what the results may mean.

An MRI brain scan creates detailed images of the brain, its blood vessels and nearby structures using a magnet and radio waves. Doctors use it to look for stroke, tumours, infection, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy causes, memory problems and other brain conditions, without radiation.

Why Is an MRI Brain Done?

MRI shows soft brain tissue much better than CT. It can detect small changes such as early stroke, tiny tumours, inflammation, demyelination and abnormal blood vessels. It does not use radiation, so it is suitable for repeat scans. See MRI vs CT scan for a comparison.

Common Reasons for the Scan

  • Stroke or suspected stroke. See MRI for stroke
  • Migraine or lasting headache with warning signs. See MRI for headache
  • Seizures, fainting or unexplained dizziness
  • Memory or behaviour changes
  • Suspected tumour, infection or hydrocephalus
  • Hearing loss on one side or vision changes

How to Prepare

  • No fasting is needed for a plain MRI brain; follow the centre's advice if contrast is planned.
  • Remove hairpins, earrings, hearing aids and dentures.
  • Tell the staff about implants, a pacemaker or aneurysm clips. See MRI safety.
  • Do not apply hair products with metallic particles.

What Happens During the Scan?

You lie on your back with your head in a support, and a coil is placed around your head. The table slides into the scanner. The scan takes 20 to 40 minutes. You will hear loud knocking sounds, and you must stay still, since even small head movements blur the images. If contrast is needed, it is given through a vein halfway through. See MRI procedure and MRI with contrast.

Understanding the Result

The radiologist describes brain structure, blood vessels and any abnormal area. Many reports mention small, non-specific spots in the white matter, which are common with age, hypertension or migraine and are often not serious. Your neurologist will explain what matters for you. See how to read your MRI report.

A Practical Example

Vivek, 29, has a seizure for the first time. His CT brain is normal, but an MRI brain shows a small area of scarring in the temporal lobe. This guides his neurologist to the right medicine and further tests. In another case, a 70-year-old with sudden weakness has an MRI that confirms a small stroke, and treatment starts without delay.

Quick Summary

  • MRI brain gives the most detailed view of brain tissue
  • No radiation; 20 to 40 minutes
  • No fasting for a plain scan
  • Metal safety checks are essential
  • Results must be read with symptoms

Tips for a Good MRI Brain Scan

  • Stay as still as possible; even swallowing gently is fine, but avoid head movement.
  • Close your eyes if the coil near your face feels tight.
  • Use earplugs or headphones for the noise.
  • Bring previous brain scans or CT reports for comparison.
  • If you feel anxious, read MRI claustrophobia tips.

Tell the technologist if you have a headache, a dental implant, a recent head injury or a ventriculoperitoneal shunt, as these may need extra checks.

Booking and Report Time

An MRI brain is usually booked in a 45-minute slot. Plain scans need no fasting, but arrive early for safety checks. Carry your doctor's prescription and old reports. Reports are usually ready in 24 to 48 hours, and a CD or digital copy can be provided for your neurologist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can an MRI brain scan detect?

Stroke, tumours, infection, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy causes and other brain problems.

Do I need contrast for MRI brain?

Sometimes, such as for tumours or infection.

Is MRI brain painful?

No. Only noise and lying still can be uncomfortable.

How long does MRI brain take?

About 20 to 40 minutes.

Is MRI brain better than CT?

For detail, yes. For emergencies and bleeding, CT is faster.

Can I have MRI brain with a pacemaker?

Only if the device is MRI-conditional.

Will an MRI brain show anxiety?

No. Anxiety is not seen on imaging, but MRI may rule out other causes.

Can children have an MRI brain?

Yes, sometimes with sedation. See MRI for children.

How soon is the report ready?

Usually 24 to 48 hours.
