Simple steps to prepare for an MRI: what to wear, what to remove, fasting rules and what to tell the staff so your scan goes smoothly.
To prepare for an MRI scan, remove all metal items, wear comfortable clothes, tell the staff about implants, pregnancy or kidney problems, and fast only if your scan is for the abdomen or pelvis. Most brain, spine and joint MRIs need no special diet.
Before You Leave Home
- Eat normally unless your centre asks you to fast.
- Take regular medicines with water, unless your doctor says otherwise.
- Wear loose clothes without metal zips, hooks or buttons. You may be given a gown.
- Avoid makeup with metallic glitter, and avoid hair clips or wigs with metal.
- Keep your old scan films, CDs and reports ready. See what an MRI scan is for the basics.
Metal and Implants: The Most Important Check
The MRI machine has a very strong magnet. Metal can move, heat up or spoil the picture. Tell the staff if you have any of the following:
- Pacemaker or defibrillator
- Cochlear (ear) implant or hearing aid
- Brain aneurysm clips
- Metal pieces in the eye or body from injury or work
- Joint replacement, stents, screws, plates or dental implants
- Insulin pump, nerve stimulator or drug patch
Many modern implants are safe, but each needs checking. Read MRI safety with implants.
Fasting and Bladder Rules
For MRI of the abdomen, liver or MRCP, you may need to avoid food for 4 to 6 hours, because an empty stomach and bowel give clearer pictures. For a pelvis scan, you may be asked to come with a comfortably full bladder. Brain, spine, knee and shoulder scans do not need fasting. See MRI abdomen scan and MRI pelvis scan.

Some scans use a gadolinium contrast injection. Tell the team if you have kidney disease, a past reaction, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. A recent blood creatinine report is often requested. Learn more in MRI with contrast.
Pregnancy, Children and Anxiety
- Pregnant women should always inform the staff. See MRI during pregnancy.
- Young children may need sedation or a parent beside them. See MRI for children.
- If closed spaces make you anxious, speak to your doctor earlier. See MRI claustrophobia tips.
A Practical Example
Meena, 52, has knee pain and an old hip replacement. She tells the staff about the implant at booking. The centre checks the implant card, confirms it is MRI-safe, and proceeds. She wears a cotton track suit, leaves her gold chain at home and carries her X-ray. The scan takes 25 minutes and the report is ready the next day. Preparing early avoided delay at the centre.
What to Expect on the Day
You fill in a safety form, change into a gown and lie on the table. Earplugs reduce the loud knocking noise. The technologist talks to you through an intercom. See MRI scan procedure for each step.
Quick Summary: MRI Preparation Checklist
- Remove every metal item, including phone, cards and hair clips.
- Declare any implant, pacemaker, clip or metal fragment.
- Fast for 4 to 6 hours only if your scan is for the abdomen or MRCP.
- Bring old scans and a list of medicines.
- Tell the staff if you are pregnant, have kidney disease or fear closed spaces.
- Arrive 15 minutes early and use the toilet before the scan.
When to call the centre first: if you have a new implant, a recent surgery, or you are unsure about any instruction. A quick call is better than a delayed or cancelled scan. See also MRI vs CT scan if you are unsure why MRI was chosen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to fast before an MRI?
Only for abdomen, pelvis and MRCP scans, usually for 4 to 6 hours. Other scans need no fasting.
Can I take my medicines on the day?
Yes, in most cases. Ask your doctor if you are unsure.
What should I wear for an MRI?
Wear loose, metal-free clothes. A gown may be provided.
Can I wear jewellery or a watch?
No. Remove all metal items, cards and phones before entering the scan room.
Can I have an MRI with a pacemaker?
Only some pacemakers are MRI-conditional. The centre must check your device card first.
Can I bring someone with me?
A family member can wait outside. In special cases they may be allowed inside after safety checks.
Is a blood test needed before MRI?
Only for contrast scans or kidney concerns, where creatinine is checked.
Will I be given earplugs?
Yes. Earplugs or headphones are provided because the machine is loud.
How long should I plan to stay?
Plan for about 45 to 60 minutes including paperwork. See how long an MRI takes.
