MRI Orbit Scan for Eye and Optic Nerve Problems

MRI Orbit Scan for Eye and Optic Nerve Problems

MRI of the orbit shows the eye socket, optic nerve and eye muscles. Learn when it is advised for vision loss, optic neuritis, bulging eye and tumours.

An MRI orbit scan shows the optic nerve, eye muscles, fat, blood vessels and the back of the eye socket in great detail without radiation. It is advised for unexplained vision loss, pain on eye movement, double vision, a bulging eye, suspected optic neuritis, tumours and some infections.

What Does MRI Show That CT Does Not?

CT is excellent for bone injury, foreign bodies and sinus disease. MRI shows the optic nerve and soft tissues, including inflammation, tumours and the way the nerve leaves the eye towards the brain. MRI of the brain is often combined with it to look for multiple sclerosis and other brain causes. See CT orbit scan and MRI brain scan.

When Is MRI Orbit Advised?

  • Sudden or gradual vision loss that eye examination does not explain
  • Pain when moving the eyes
  • Bulging of one or both eyes
  • Double vision or drooping eyelid
  • Suspected tumour or infection in the eye socket
  • Before surgery on the orbit

Safety Check for Metal

Metal fragments in the eye can move in the magnet and cause serious injury. People who have worked with metal (welding, grinding), had eye injuries or surgery must tell the staff. An X-ray or CT of the orbit is done first if there is doubt. See MRI safety.

Preparation and Procedure

No fasting is needed for a plain scan. Remove eye makeup, contact lenses and metal. Keep your eyes gently closed and still, since eye movement blurs the images. The scan takes 30 to 40 minutes, and contrast is often used for inflammation and tumours. See MRI with contrast and MRI procedure.

A Practical Example

Pooja, 29, has blurred vision in her left eye and pain when she moves it, over three days. An MRI orbit with brain shows inflammation of the optic nerve and a few spots in the brain. Her neurologist starts treatment with steroids and arranges tests for multiple sclerosis. Vision improves in weeks.

Care Tips and Key Facts

  • Sudden vision loss needs urgent eye care
  • Tell the staff about any metal injury
  • Do not rub the eyes during the scan
  • Bring eye test and visual field reports

After the Scan and Next Steps

Take the MRI to an ophthalmologist or neurologist. Optic neuritis is often treated with steroids and followed with brain MRI and tests. Thyroid eye disease needs endocrine and eye care, and tumours need a team approach. Protect your eyes, quit smoking (which worsens thyroid eye disease) and attend follow-up visits.

Questions to Ask Your Doctor

  • Is the cause in the eye, the nerve or the brain?
  • Do I need MRI of the brain as well?
  • Is treatment urgent?
  • Which tests can protect my vision in the long run?

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not mentioning an old metal eye injury.
  • Ignoring sudden vision loss.
  • Wearing eye makeup or lenses into the scan.

Booking, Timing and Report

Book a slot of about 45 to 60 minutes, and arrive 15 minutes early for the safety form. Carry your doctor's prescription, implant cards and old scans. Reports are usually ready within 24 to 48 hours, and you can request images on a CD or digital link for your specialist.

Understanding Your Report

The report may mention optic nerve enhancement, enlarged eye muscles or a mass behind the eye. Optic nerve inflammation is often reversible with timely treatment, while an enlarged muscle pattern points to thyroid eye disease. Your eye specialist will compare MRI findings with vision tests, visual fields and blood tests.
