  • Pregnancy Associated Plasma Protein - A (PAPP-A)

This test is performed alongside Ultrasound (Nuchal Translucency) in pregnancy.

When and why is Double Maker test done?

This test is performed during the first trimester of pregnancy. As mentioned above, it is a predictive test; it is done to check for any chromosomal abnormalities in the growing baby inside womb.

This is just a screening test, to evaluate risk of having chromosomal abnormalities in a baby. To confirm the type of chromosomal abnormality further diagnosis such as amniocentesis or chorionic villi sampling is required.

What parameters confirm the possibility of chromosomal abnormality in Double Marker test report?

This test measures the amount of Beta- human Chorionic Gonadotropin (beta- hCG) and Pregnancy Associated Plasma Protein - A (PAPP-A) in mother’s blood sample. Abnormal amount of both these markers in blood suggest chromosomal abnormality in baby.

Nuchal Translucency (NT) scan is also performed which measures the back of baby’s neck. It basically measures the thickness of nuchal fold on back of baby’s neck. At 12 weeks, less than 3.5 mm is considered normal nuchal translucency measurement.

Ultrasound is also performed for Nuchal Translucency.
