A femur, or thigh X-ray shows the upper leg (the area between the hip and knee). One is taken from the front (AP, or anteroposterior view), and the other from the side (lateral view).

Why is it done? 

• • An X-ray of the femur may assist in determining the origin of upper leg symptoms such as discomfort, limp, soreness, edema, or deformity. It can identify a fracture, and once a fracture has been fixed, it can assist in establishing whether the bone is aligned correctly.
