What is Rest MPI Test?

Rest Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI) is a non-invasive diagnostic nuclear medicine test that is used to evaluate blood flow to the heart muscle (myocardium) at rest. It provides valuable information about the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) by assessing perfusion, or the delivery of blood to the heart. The three-dimensional images produced by this perfusion study are called perfusion images because they show which areas of the heart muscles are perfused, or supplied with blood.

Why is Resting MPI Done?

Resting Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI) is done to assess the blood flow to the heart muscles and detect if there is any area of reduced blood supply. Which may indicate the presence of heart disease i.e. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). It is commonly recommended by healthcare providers to patients suffering from chest pain, breathlessness, and fatigue as well as individuals with a high rate of cardiac arrest.

How is it Done?

Preparations

Before the test, patients may be asked to avoid eating or drinking any caffeine-containing products for a certain period like caffeine as it may interfere with the accuracy of the test results.

The patient should inform their healthcare provider about any medications they are taking as certain medications may need to be temporarily stopped before the testing.

Inform your doctor when you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as it includes the risk of contaminating the breast milk with a tracer.

The patient is advised to wear loose clothes or a hospital gown.

Remove jewelry or any metal objects before the scan.

Fasting may be required before the procedure

Injection

During the test, a small amount of a radioactive tracer is injected into a vein of the arm. This tracer travels through the bloodstream and is taken up by the heart muscle cells.

Resting Imaging

After injecting the tracer the patient is asked to lie on a table while images of your heart are made. The patient then undergoes imaging with a specialized camera called a gamma camera or a PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan.

The camera detects the radioactive tracer in the heart and creates images that show the distribution of blood flow rate.

After the scan is done IV line will be removed and you will be allowed to leave, unless your healthcare provider tells you differently.

Results

The result of the resting MPI will be given to the patients within 24 hours and also you can discuss the reports with highly experienced radiologists.

Post scan instructions

You may take your medicine after the scan

Keep your distance from pregnant ladies and children at least for 24 hours.

Drink plenty of fluids.

Why Do I Need a Resting Myocardial Perfusion Scan?

Healthcare providers recommend Resting MPI in the following cases

  • To detect the cause of chest pain, either new or occurring over days or longer.
  • To diagnose coronary artery disease, which is the narrowing of the blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle
  • It is also used to detect heart muscle damage after a heart attack.
  • It is also used to assess the blood flow to areas of the heart muscle that have had blood flow restored by bypass surgery, angioplasty, or stent placement.
  • It is also used to detect the scar tissue in the heart from disease that may or may not related to coronary artery disease.

What Are the Risks of an MPI Test?

It is a safe procedure for most of the people.MPI studies expose you to a low dose of radiation. MPI exposes the patient to a low dose of radiation which is completely safe.

If you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant or if you are a nursing mother, tell your healthcare professional before you have the test as it may harm your baby.

FAQ

It is also known as the resting nuclear stress test.
A Rest Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI) Study is a non-invasive diagnostic test to evaluate the blood flow through the coronary arteries and the heart muscle by using PET or SPECT imaging of the patient's heart before and after exercise.

Resting MPI is a painless procedure. Patients may experience slight discomfort from the injection of the tracer, the imaging process, and any necessary preparation.

It is a safe procedure and risks associated with the procedure are minimal. The radioactive tracer may cause some allergies in a few patients.

Your test will usually take two to four hours.

Myocardial perfusion stress imaging (MPI) that is normal or almost normal indicates that coronary artery disease (CAD), which can be fatal, is not present. However, even in the absence of notable perfusion anomalies on MPI, severe left main or three-vessel CAD can occur.

Stress MPI with MRI, PET, and SPECT was compared to ICA without FFR in a previously published meta-analysis. The results showed comparable diagnostic accuracy for PET at the patient level in terms of pooled sensitivity and specificity (sensitivity, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.81–0.87; specificity, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.74–0.87).

A nuclear stress test could take time from 24 -48 hours which may vary from centre to centre. A medical professional, such as a radiologist or cardiologist, needs to examine the pictures and analyze the findings. Heart conditions including coronary artery disease can be identified and tracked with the use of a nuclear cardiac stress test.
Ganesh Diagnostic Centre provides reports within 24 hours as er understand the value of early diagnosis.
