Urodynamics test or urodynamics in Delhi is available at the best Diagnostic Centre that can help to detect exactly where the problem lies when you notice your urinary bladder is not working efficiently.

What is a Urodynamic Test?

Urodynamic test is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates the problems of bladder, urinary sphincter, urethra and urinary tract.

With the help of this test a healthcare provider can detect and measure how well you store and release urine. This test also evaluates  whether your bladder is contracting or not, causing urine to leak.

What Are the Reasons for the Urodynamic Test?

Urodynamic test is recommended by the doctor if you are dealing with these conditions:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Frequent urination
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Painful urination
  • Recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Pain or difficulty in starting the flow of pee
  • Problem in emptying the bladder (Urinary retention)
  • Slow or weak urine flow
  • Neurogenic bladder dysfunction
  • Urine flows in an irregular manner like flow that stops and starts again.
  • Individual who have had pelvic surgery
  • Patients who undergo underground radiation therapy and other therapies which can cause bladder dysfunction.

What is the Procedure of the Urodynamic Test?

To evaluate the function of a urinary test a doctor will recommend a urodynamic test that involves multiple tests at one time to get the best results of how your urinary system is working.

Uroflowmetry

This test measures the speed and amount of pee.

Procedure- To evaluate your healthcare provider will ask you to have a full bladder then you are advised to pee into a machine (an electronic toilet) that automatically measures the speed and volume of urine by creating a graph that shows if there are any changes.

A negative result indicates weak bladder muscles, blockages that are affecting the stream of urine.

Cystometry

This test measures:

  • Capacity of a bladder to hold the urine
  • Detect the pressure builds up inside the urinary bladder as it stores the urine
  • Capacity of bladder when it is full and when patients feel the urge to pee.

Procedure- Initially a catheter is used to empty the bladder completely. After that a special catheter is placed in the bladder which is equipped with a device known as a manometer.  Another catheter may be placed in rectum or vagina to record the pressure here. Healthcare providers may be asked to cough or strain during this procedure to detect the changes in pressure on the bladder or if you leak urine.

  1. Pressure Flow Study- This test detects the pressure in the bladder during urination.
    • Procedure- After the cystometry test you will be asked to empty the bladder while a device (manometer) examines the pressure on bladder and urine flow rate.
  2. Electromyography- This test measures the pressure during urination on the bladder.
    • Procedure-This test uses a machine or a sensor that measures the electrical activity of the muscles and nerves in and around the bladder and sphincters.
  3. Post Void Residual Measurement- This test measures the amount of pee left in the bladder after peeing.
    • Procedure- Ultrasound is used to detect the remaining amount of urine left behind after the pee.
  4. Video Urodynamic Test- In this test cystometry, uroflowmetry and X-Ray cystography into a single test.
    • Procedure- A digital X-Ray machine is used to measure the urine flow and pressure in your bladder and rectum. This test provides images of the bladder during filling and emptying. A doctor may recommend this test with contrast. Your bladder will be filled with a contrast dye-containing fluid if you need an X-ray, which improves the clarity of the images. Most of the time, your body doesn't absorb these contrast dyes. On the other hand, prior to any procedure or treatment, individuals with a contrast dye allergy should always inform their healthcare provider about their allergy (as well as any others).

How to Prepare for a Urodynamic Test?

Urodynamic tests don't require any special preparation.

Before the test patient may advise to drink fluids before the tests so that your bladder is full.

Aftercare

After the test the patient may experience some discomfort or soreness while urinating. Patients may experience a small amount of blood in your pee.

Your urodynamics test will last approximately 60 minutes. The test is generally painless, so you don't require sedation. To begin your test, the nurse will ask you to empty your bladder in a special chair.

Make sure you have an appointment with your doctor to review the results of your test. This test very rarely causes any complications or problems. Some women report slight bladder irritation or burning after the test. Fewer than 5% of women will develop a bladder infection.

After having urodynamic tests, a person may feel mild discomfort for a few hours when urinating. Drinking an 8-ounce glass of water every half-hour for 2 hours may help to reduce the discomfort. Taking a warm bath after the study may also help relieve any discomfort.

The cost of a urodynamic test ranges from INR 7000 to INR 15000 depending on the diagnostic facility, location, insurance coverage, and discount provided by the diagnostic centre.

Urodynamics is a relatively safe office procedure; however, as with any invasive procedure or test, there are risks associated with performing UDS. A few simple steps can help avoid complications in the majority of patients.
