What is an X-ray Sacro-Coccygeal Test?

An X-ray of the sacrococcygeal spine is used to see the sacrum (the triangle bone at the end of the spine), coccyx (the tailbone, positioned directly above the anus), and surrounding soft tissues such as muscles.

Why is it done? 

• To discover the cause of persistent lower back pain or coccydynia
• To check for fractures of the sacrum or tailbone.
• To diagnose tumors, birth defects, infections, inflammation, or degenerative diseases at the sacrococcygeal junction.

What is the procedure for the sacro-coccygeal spine radiograph test?

The X-Ray technician will explain. 

How does one prepare for the test? 

• Wear loose-fitting clothing. Before the X-ray, you might be asked to go to the bathroom and empty your bladder.
• If you are pregnant, notify your technician, as radiation may harm the baby.
