What is an X-ray Pelvis Lateral View Test?

A pelvic X-ray shows the hip bones, the top section of the thigh bone, the hip joint, and the skin and muscles. When the patient is positioned with their legs bent, an X-ray tech will capture photos of the pelvis from the side (lateral view).

Why is it done? 

  • A pelvic X-ray may assist physicians in determining the reason for pelvic, hip, or upper leg discomfort, edema, or deformity. It may also reveal fractures after an injury.
  • When necessary, X-rays may aid in surgical planning and post-operative evaluation. It may also aid in detecting cysts, cancers, and infections of the pelvic bones in their later stages.
