What is an X-ray Optic Foramen-Right Test?

The X-ray examination of the optic foramen is used to see the entrance of the optic canal, which is situated at the base of the skull and is referred to as the optic foramen. The optic nerve as well as the ophthalmic artery go via the optic canal on their way into the orbital cavity.

Why is it done? 

• To identify any bone fractures near the optic foramen
• To search for any changes in the form or size of the optic canal that may cause nerve and artery compression.
• To identify any optic neuropathies or probable infections and inflammations in this region.
• To identify any possible aberrant growth in this region (for eg. neurofibromatosis)

What is the Procedure for the Optic Foramen -Right Radiograph Test?

The X-Ray technician will explain. 

How does one prepare for the test? 

• Wear loose-fitting clothing. No preparation is needed.
• If you are pregnant, notify your technician, as radiation may harm the baby.
