What is a Nasal X-ray Bone LAT View Test?

X-rays with lateral nasal views identify the nasal fractures. The nasal fractures are frequently seen in the adults and also in some children.

The deformity, the pain, the bleeding, the edema, and the instability are known to be common symptoms of getting this scan done.

Note: It is seen that man-a-times, the edema might disguise in form of the instability and further deformities.

Why is this test done?

The most common type of nasal injury that could lead to a broken nose bone is a lateral impact injury.

  • This x-ray would help in finding why the nose has been swollen, either to an injury or any pathology.
  • Depending on the appropriate area of concern, this view might also be done bilaterally (i.e. for the comparison of the affected versus the unaffected side) or unilaterally (that is when it affects only one side).

How does one prepare for the test?

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing. No preparation is needed.
  • If you are pregnant, notify your technician, as radiation may harm the baby.
  • The patient is then given a particular contrast medium. For example, barium or the iodine.
  • The contrast medium would then help in outlining the specific area in form of x-ray image. Then, the patient might receive this contrast medium in the form of either an injection or enema.
  • Specific instructions for the procedure of an X-ray are then  given by the healthcare professional.

Procedure of Nasal X-ray Bone LAT View Test

Patient position

  • Rest lateral aspect of the individual’s head (which has the side of interest) against the proper image detector.
  • Then, you are requested to adjust the patients head into a true lateral position, with the mid Sagittal plane being parallel to the image detector
  • For the patient's comfort, adjust the patient's body into an oblique position
  • During the Test, your body will be positioned in between a machine producing X-rays and a plate. This plate creates the image digitally or using the X-ray film.
  • Depending on the type of X-ray, you may be asked to position in a certain manner. The X-ray technician would then ask you to take a deep breath and hold it for the next few seconds.
  • After the scanning is complete, the respective radiologist would examine the images to understand whether any more of them are required ahead. Once the radiologist is satisfied, the patient could go back home.

After Care:

  • No particular care is required.
  • You can get back to your routinely activities as soon as possible.

Accuracy of the Test

This X- ray test uses the plain images with a lateral nasal view to diagnose your nasal fractures. This X ray test with the lateral view is said to have an 82% reliability rate and produces accurate results repeatedly.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ

The individual’s cheek must be placed in contact with the imaging plate directly. The technician must position the patients nasal bones on center of an imaging plate and then adjust patient's head into the position- true lateral position, so as to ensure that inter- pupillary line is seen to be perpendicular to the designated imaging plate.

Ossification of nasal bones in humans.

The nasal bones are said to ossify from a single center itself which usually appears early in third month within cartilaginous nasal capsule, which could be assessed during 12th-week prenatal scan for the person’s nasal bone appearance.

The absence of this ossification is also associated with the Down syndrome.

Standard imaging method that is used to diagnose any nasal fractures is the direct radiography.

The lateral view would also use x-rays that to evaluate the nasal dorsum and the occipital views that will be used for lateral nasal walls.

The nasal bones are said to be the most frequently fractured in bones of the maxillofacial area due to any relative weakness and outward projection of nose on the face.

The Nasal Septal fractures have also been associated with the nasal bone fractures in around 42% to 96% of cases.

The Walsham forceps, the Asch forceps, and the Boies elevators are widely known surgical instruments which are then inserted into the nasal openings to further lift fracture site for any reduction procedure. The patients with the complex nasal fractures and those with the definite depression points will be more corrected with these tools.

As such, there aren’t any prescribed limits on the radiation doses for patients.

The doctor generally considers the benefits versus risks for the patient, to understand how much radiation can be justified for accurate diagnosis and monitoring of the disease.

After the patient has undergone any radiographic, or fluoroscopic, or CT, or ultrasound, or the MRI exam, no radiation is said to remain in the body.
