An X-ray of the mandible (jaw) is used to see the structures of the jaw bone, the temporomandibular joint (TM joint), and the soft tissues like muscles around them.

Why is it done? 

• To determine the source of any pain, discomfort, or difficulty in the jaw's mobility to identify the problem.
• To search for any teeth that may be affected (wisdom teeth).
• To make a diagnosis of any possible jaw fractures or dislocations.
• To establish a diagnosis for any possible infection, inflammation, cyst, or abnormal growth (tumor) in the jaw region

How does one prepare for the test? 

• Wear loose-fitting clothing. No preparation is needed.
• If you are pregnant, notify your technician, as radiation may harm the baby.
