What is an X-ray Base Skull Test?

An X-ray of the skull base identifies fractures, birth malformations, infection, foreign substances, pituitary tumors, and metabolic and endocrine diseases that induce skull bone deformities. Skull X-rays can reveal brain calcifications, nasal sinuses, and cancer.

Why is it done? 

• To diagnose traumatic brain injury (TBI), head/skull fractures and dislocation of skull joints must be identified.

• To detect brain conditions such as congenital brain abnormalities, brain tumors, and otosclerosis (deafness due to inner ear bone overgrowth).

• To determine otitis media (middle ear infection), loss of calcium from the skull bone, headache, and infection of the skull bones.

• To examine hearing loss, sinusitis, infection of the mastoid bone, and pain owing to elevated intracranial pressure.

What is the procedure for the base of the skull radiograph test?

The X-Ray technician will explain. 

How does one prepare for the test? 

• If you are pregnant, notify your technician, as radiation may harm the baby.
