Whole Body Bone Scan

The whole-body bone scan is also known as Triple Phase Bone Scan. It is most commonly used to detect the areas of abnormal growth of bones due to fractures, tumours, infection, or other bone diseases.

How should I prepare for the scan?

>>No special preparation is required as such

How long does the test take?

>>It takes about 3-4 hours

What do I expect?

• You will be given a radioactive isotope injection into a vein in your arm.
• It takes 2-3 hours for the injection to circulate in the body and get absorbed in the bone.
• Before the second part, the Technician will ask you to empty your bladder.
• You will be asked to remove all external metal and lay flat on an imaging table for a 30 minutes scan from head to toe.

Note: For Triple phase/Three phase bone scan, Injection will be given under the scanner and delayed images after 2 to 3 hours

During the scan

• Void before the scan
• You will lie down under the scan and images will be taken.
• The total time taken for the test is 30 to 40 mins.

Post Scan Instruction

• Drink plenty of water
• Keep distance from pregnant females and children for 24 hours
• Breastfeeding mothers to avoid feeding for 24 hours

Whole body bone scan result

The results of the whole body bone scan are considered normal when the radioactive substance is spread evenly throughout the body. It means you don't have any major bone tissue.

The Results are considered abnormal when the scan shows dark hot spots or lighter cold spots in the bones. The Hot spots in the bones describe the places where an excess of radioactive substance has collected. The Cold spots in the bones describe the areas where the radioactive substance didn’t collect at all.

Abnormal results indicate that you have a bone disorder, such as cancer or arthritis or a bone infection.
