What is the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory Test (VDRL Test)?

The VDRL test checks for antibodies against syphilis. This test doesn't find syphilis-causing bacteria. It looks for antibodies against chemicals released by bacteria-damaged cells.

It detects active syphilis and monitors the treatment response. Non-reactive RPR tests may indicate no current infection or a cured infection. False-positive RPRs can occur in tuberculosis, malaria, and viral pneumonia. A positive RPR indicates prior or present syphilis infection. Syphilis can cause internal organ damage if undetected for years.

Why done? 

• To check for syphilis in people who have signs of sexually transmitted diseases.
• To test those at risk of syphilis exposure, such as those with another STD or HIV.
• Pregnancy syphilis screening.
• Monitoring syphilis treatment.

Antibiotics are first. This lowers syphilis antibodies, which can be tested with another RPR. Rising or stable levels indicate a prolonged infection.
