What is Occult Blood Test?

The Occult blood is also known as as hematuria. IT is seen that generally frank bleeding is not common.

The incidence of hematuria majorly could be due to three causes such as systemic diseases are the following:

  1. Involving kidneys (e.g. Diabetes mellitus, hypertension etc)
  2.  Diseases involving renal parenchyma pathologies(e.g. glomerulonephritis and its associated diseases)
  3. Diseases that associated with abnormal urology or the urologic diseases/disorders (e.g. malignant tumor, urolithiasis, UTI etc).

Normal Values in a Healthy Individual

More than 5 RBCs per hpf is usually considered as abnormal.

While RBC casts are suggestive of the glomerulotubular source of hematuria.

Furthermore, the absence of the RBCs or the RBC casts despite a positive test result also suggests hemoglobinuria and/or myoglobinuria.

Note: The test usually requires a urine sample. If urine presents with red coloration, it would be observed under the microscope.

In case, the RBC is not observed, occult blood test (presence of hemologlobin in blood) will be performed.

How to derive results from the experimental outcomes?

It is seen that the positive results indicate any o f the following conditions:

  1. Leukemia
  2. Thrombocytopenia
  3. Coagulation factor deficiency
  4. Side effects of medicine
  5. Hemolytic anemia
  6. Kidney stones
  7. Urinary Tract Infection

What is the Reference range for examination of urine sediment?

0-12 RBC per hpf

What does a high/Low Occult blood level indicate?

  1. Low: When the value is low, or it even considered negative, then the urine occult blood test would be considered normal and healthy, as it would further indicate that there is no blood present in the urine.
  2. High: Blood in the urine could be caused by some common and underlying problems, for example:
    • Urinary tract infections
    • Kidney stones
    • Injuries or certain medicines
    • Kidney diseases, including cancer

Note : It might be possible that the blood in the urine is eliminated from the body  with or without any pain.
