What is an Ultrasound Head?

Ultrasonography of the head produces images of the brain and the cerebrospinal fluid. Since ultrasound waves cannot easily travel through bone, this examination is typically conducted on infants whose skulls are not yet fully formed. It is also known as Cranial ultrasound.

Why is it done?

Head ultrasound is advised for the following purpose:

  • To monitor and Follow-up premature/preterm or sick neonates.
  • Examine for hydrocephalus.
  • Detect bleeding/hematoma in the brain or ventricles (intraventricular haemorrhage/ IVH).
  • To look for Periventricular leukomalacia which damages the white matter of brain around the ventricles (PVL).
  • Examine for congenital disabilities.
  • To look for infection or tumour.

How Do I Prepare My Baby for the Test?

No fasting or any special preparation is needed. Dress your baby in loose-fitting and comfortable clothes. On the day of ultrasound imaging, don't apply any oil, powders or lotions on the scalp of baby.

What Is the Procedure for Usg Head or Cranium?

Baby will be positioned on the examination table. A sonographer will first apply a clear gel over the Fontanelle, usually the anterior fontanelle (bregma) which serves as the acoustic window and then a hand-held transducer is moved over it which sends high frequency sound waves to brain and surrounding tissues. Once the procedure is over, tissue paper will be used to wipe off the gel.

Aftercare:

No aftercare is required.

the sensitivity of neonatal ultrasound to detect any brain injury predictive of adverse motor outcomes at 2–3 years ranges between 20% to 60%, with a specificity of 80–95%, especially with severe injury.

Structural abnormalities of the brain can be detected by transcranial B-ultrasound.
