Trypanosoma brucei is a parasitic protozoan flagellate that causes African trypanosomiasis, also known as sleeping sickness, in humans and animals. It is transmitted to humans and animals through the bite of infected tsetse flies.

Symptoms of African trypanosomiasis can vary depending on the stage of the disease but may include fever, fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and sleep disturbances, which can give the disease its name "sleeping sickness." As the disease progresses, it can cause neurological symptoms such as confusion, poor coordination, and behavioural changes.

Diagnosis of African trypanosomiasis typically involves microscopic examination of blood, lymph node aspirates, or cerebrospinal fluid to identify the presence of Trypanosoma brucei parasites. Molecular techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) may also be used for confirmation. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are critical to prevent the disease from progressing to its later stages, which can be more difficult to treat.
