Leukocytes also known as WBC defend our bodies against infections and diseases.  TLC test helps in determining the capacity of the body to fight against diseases. It diagnoses an infection, inflammation, and bone marrow disorders and monitors chemotherapy treatment.

Why is Total Leucocyte Count (TLC) done?

In regular tests, the TLC test acts as a part of the CBC test.

To diagnose infection, inflammation, autoimmune conditions
• To diagnose bone marrow disorders that decrease the WBC
• To observe the bone marrow function
• To monitor chemotherapy treatment etc.

What does Total Leucocyte Count (TLC) Measure?

Our blood is made up of various types of cells such as RBC, WBC and Platelets that are suspended in a fluid.

There are five types of WBCs neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes three types of Lymphocytes are B-Lymphocytes, T-Lymphocytes, and natural killer (NK) cells.

There are various factors behind the amount of WBC in the blood. Depending on those factors such as age, gender, health condition, environmental factors, etc. the amount of WBC circulate in the blood.

Bone marrow diseases increase the production of WBCs in response to an infection, and inflammation in the body. During bone marrow disease, the total leukocyte count remains high in the blood and once the infection and inflammation subside, the production of WBC  by bone marrow decreases and the count of white blood cells in circulation falls back to normal levels.

WBC count in blood also is affected by various other conditions such as immune system disorders, autoimmune conditions, cancer, etc.  The TLC test serves as an indication of a condition affecting the body.
