Surgical Profile

Patients about to undergo surgery must undergo a series of tests collectively known as a surgical profile.

The objective of the surgical profile is to evaluate the surgical risk in patients undergoing minor and medium surgical procedures.

These tests are advised for patients with common chronic conditions.

The surgical profile includes the following tests

1. General Laboratory Tests

• CBP(complete blood picture)
• ESR(erythrocyte sedimentation rate)
• Blood Grouping RH-typing
• BT(bleeding time) and CT(clotting time)

2. Glucose Level Tests-

• RBS/FBS(random and fasting blood sugar)

3. Renal Function Tests-

• Serum creatinine
• Blood urea

4. Viral Infection markers-

• HbsAg(hepatitis B surface antigen test)
• VDRL(Venereal disease research laboratory test)
• HCV Antibody

5. Radiology-

• X-ray Chest

6. Cardiology-

• ECG(electrocardiography)

Some of the tests are elaborated on below-

• Chest X-rays- These can help determine the causes of shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, and certain fevers. They also help in deciding abnormal heart, breathing, and lung sounds.

• Electrocardiogram (ECG)-  The test registers the heart's electrical activity. It shows abnormal rhythms (arrhythmias or dysrhythmias), finds heart muscle damage and helps find the cause of chest pain, fluttering palpitations, and heart murmurs.

• White blood count- This test helps in diagnosing fevers and infections

• Glucose- It measures your blood sugar levels.

• Complete blood count (CBC)-This test checks for a low number of red blood cells (anemia) and infection.

• BT/CT- These tests determine how well your blood clots and note the time of bleeding and clotting.

Importance of Surgical Profile

It is beneficial for both Patients and doctors -

• It makes the doctor aware of any infectious disease which they can acquire from the patient during surgery unintentionally.
• Significant casualties can be avoided if the doctor knows the patient's body se status.

Surgeries are not performed if a patient's blood sugar level or blood pressure is high or low. Therefore, sugar level tests are advised before any surgery.

Precautions Before Tests

• Fasting blood sugar: Maintain fasting 10-12 hours before sample collection.
• It is advised to refrain from alcohol before the test.
• If you are taking any pre-existing medication, it should only be stopped after consultation with the referring Physician.

Rationale of surgical profile

Surgical profiles should not be undertaken, as a rule; they should be based on thorough clinical examination, the nature of the surgical procedure, and the patient's clinical status. They should be performed to guide and optimize post-operative care of the patients.
