Shigellosis

Shigellosis, also known as bacillary dysentery, is an infection of the intestines caused by the bacterium Shigella. It is a type of gastroenteritis that can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Shigellosis is most commonly spread through the fecal-oral route, which means that it is transmitted when food or water contaminated with the Shigella bacteria is consumed.

Treatment for shigellosis usually involves antibiotics to kill the bacteria and fluids to prevent dehydration. Over-the-counter medications such as anti-diarrheal agents and pain relievers may also be used to manage symptoms. To prevent the spread of shigellosis, it is important to practice good hygiene such as washing your hands frequently, especially after using the bathroom, before preparing or consuming food, and after changing diapers. It is also important to properly cook and store food to avoid contamination.
