Scabies is an infectious skin infestation. It is caused by Sarcoptes scabiei ( a tiny mite). The mites burrow into the skin, where they lay eggs and cause intense itching and a rash.
Symptoms of scabies can include itching, particularly at night, a pimple-like rash, and visible tracks or burrows on the skin. Scabies can affect any part of the body, but it is most commonly found in the folds of the skin, such as between the fingers, on the wrists, elbows, armpits, waist, and buttocks.
Scabies is highly contagious and is usually spread through close personal contact, such as prolonged skin-to-skin contact or sharing of clothing or bedding. This infection also be transferred through sexual contact.
