SBT-13 Checkup Package

Patients with serious infections such as bacterial endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and necrotizing fasciitis are monitored using the serum bactericidal test (SBT). The SBT is essentially a variation of the broth dilution test adapted to evaluate the activity of a patient's serum against the infecting microorganism.

Why done? 

The test determines the effectiveness of treatment, notably in patients with endocarditis or osteomyelitis.

Endocarditis is an inflammatory disorder of the heart muscles, valves, and lining. Infection is the most common cause of endocarditis. Osteomyelitis, on the other hand, is a bacterial bone infection. It causes pain, swelling in the ankles and joints, fever, and discomfort.

Procedure

The test requires a blood sample. A needle pricks a vein in your hand or arm to collect blood.

How does one prepare for the test?
