Rickettsialpox is an acute febrile illness caused by Rickettsia akari, a type of bacteria transmitted to humans by the bite of the house mouse mite (Liponyssoides sanguineus). The disease is typically characterized by the sudden onset of fever, headache, and a rash that develops a few days after the onset of symptoms.
The rash usually starts as a small, raised, red spot at the site of the mite bite, and then spreads to other parts of the body, such as the trunk and limbs. The rash may become pustular or vesicular and may be accompanied by itching.
Other symptoms of rickettsialpox can include muscle aches, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. The disease is usually self-limited and resolves without specific treatment, although in some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed to treat the infection.
