What is the Procalcitonin Test?

The thyroid gland typically produces procalcitonin. Its blood level rises in response to infection or injury. This test detects sepsis early. In sepsis, a bacterial infection spreads from an organ to the blood. Shortness of breath, confusion, sweating, chills, and Fever are some of the symptoms. Untreated, it can be fatal.
