Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) is a rare and deadly infection of the brain. It is caused by the free-living amoeba i.e Naegleria fowleri. This amoeba is found in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, hot springs, and untreated swimming pools.
PAM occurs when the amoeba enters the body through the nose while swimming or diving in contaminated water. The amoeba can move to the brain from From the nose, where it causes inflammation as well as destruction of brain tissue. This can lead to symptoms such as headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, seizures, and altered mental status.
PAM is a very rare condition, but it is almost always fatal if left untreated. Early diagnosis is important, and treatment may include aggressive antimicrobial therapy and supportive care such as management of intracranial pressure.
