What is Preimplantation Genetic Testing?

Before being transferred to the uterus, your embryos can be tested for abnormal chromosomes. This is known as preimplantation genetic testing, or PGT. One or more cells from each embryo are sent for genetic testing. Genetically healthy embryos are transferred to the uterus, where they may attach to the lining and result in a pregnancy.

Why it is done?

PGS is the process of examining an embryo for chromosomal abnormalities. Many embryos with chromosomal abnormalities will either fail to develop into a pregnancy or result in a miscarriage. Every woman will have some chromosomally abnormal eggs. Every man has some sperm that is chromosomally abnormal. Many factors, including the parents' age and health history, can influence the percentage of abnormal embryos.

What is procedure for Preimplantation Genetic Testing?

While the embryo is growing in the IVF laboratory, one or more cells are removed and sent for genetic testing. The testing can be done in stages using various techniques. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), microarray, and single-nucleotide polymorphism are some of the techniques used (SNP).
