What is PML-RARA Qualitative test?

Promyelocytic Leukemia is a rare type of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

It is caused due to translocation (mutation) between chromosome 17 and chromosome 15. This mutation is also referred as t (15, 17).

The Retinoic Acid Receptor Alpha (RARA) gene on chromosome 17 fuses with promoter region of the Promyelocytic (PML) gene on chromosome 15.

This fusion results in a gene called PML-RARA, the transcripts of PML-RARA are detected using RTPCR.

RTPCR showing qualitative presence of PML-RARA gene transcripts is called PML-RARA Qualitative test.
