Parathyroid hormone (PTH) disorders refer to medical conditions resulting from the overproduction or underproduction of PTH by the parathyroid glands, which regulate calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood.

Symptoms

Hyperparathyroidism leads to high levels of calcium in the blood and is associated with symptoms such as:

  • Weakness
  • Bone pain
  • Kidney stones

In contrast, hypoparathyroidism leads to low levels of calcium in the blood and is associated with symptoms such as:

  • Muscle cramps
  • Seizures
  • Tingling in the fingers and toes.

Pseudohypoparathyroidism occurs when the body is resistant to the effects of PTH, leading to low calcium levels.

 Diagnosis

  • Blood tests:

Blood tests can be utilized to degree calcium, phosphorus, and PTH levels within the blood. Hoisted calcium and PTH levels may show hyperparathyroidism, whereas moo calcium and PTH levels may demonstrate hypoparathyroidism.

  • Urine tests:

Pee tests can be utilized to check for the nearness of calcium and other minerals which will be causing kidney stones or other issues.

  • Imaging tests:

Imaging tests, such as ultrasound, CT check, or MRI, can be used to find any abnormal developments or tumors in the parathyroid glands which will be causing PTH disorders.

  • Bone thickness filter:

A bone thickness filter can be utilized to check for bone misfortune or osteoporosis, which may be a result of long-term hyperparathyroidism.

  • Hereditary testing:

In a few cases, hereditary testing may be done to distinguish any hereditary changes that may be causing PTH disorders, such as in familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia.

Treatment
