Onchocerciasis (river blindness) is a parasitic disease. It is caused by Onchocerca volvulus. Onchocerca volvulus is filarial worm. It is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected black flies that breed in fast-moving streams and rivers, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa but also in some parts of Latin America and Yemen.
The adult worms of Onchocerca volvulus live in the subcutaneous tissues, causing skin lesions and severe itching. They can also invade the eye, causing visual impairment and blindness. Onchocerciasis is a leading cause of preventable blindness in the world, and its impact is particularly severe in rural communities where people rely on agriculture and fishing for their livelihoods.
