17 OH The progesterone blood test (17-OHP) is used to diagnose and monitor congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) caused by 21-hydroxylase deficiency and identify heterozygotes and diagnose moderate CAH, often known as late-onset or cryptic CAH.

17-hydroxyprogesterone is a precursor to the hormone cortisol. Cortisol is primarily produced by the adrenal cortex (the outer part of the two adrenal glands located above the kidneys). Cortisol is dubbed the "stress hormone" because of its high secretion level in reaction to physical or emotional stress.

Why done? 

It is typically ordered as part of newborn screening and may be repeated if the screening test findings are elevated.
