Neonatal conjunctivitis, also known as ophthalmia neonatorum, is a type of conjunctivitis that occurs in newborn infants within the first 28 days of life. It is caused by bacterial, viral, or rarely, fungal infections acquired during delivery.
Symptoms of neonatal conjunctivitis include redness and swelling of the conjunctiva (the thin membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids), discharge from the eye(s), and eyelids that are stuck together. In severe cases, the infection can lead to corneal scarring and blindness.
The diagnosis of neonatal conjunctivitis is made through a combination of clinical evaluation, laboratory tests, and cultures of the discharge from the eye(s).
