What is Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) Test?

Although in some MDS patients the white blood count, platelet count, or both may be increased, MDS is often diagnosed when a patient is assessed for low blood counts. A bone marrow aspirate and biopsy that demonstrates a significant infiltration of bone marrow cells that have an aberrant appearance is the defining feature of MDS. The term "funny-looking bone marrow" refers to myelodysplasia. The bone marrow sample is subjected to cytogenetics, a chromosome analysis.

Less than 20% of the cells in the bone marrow of MDS patients are immature cells referred to as blasts. Acute myeloid leukaemia is identified in the patient if blast cells account for more than 20% of the total cells.

What is the procedure for Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) test?

If your doctor believes you have myelodysplastic syndrome, a physical examination, medical history, and testing may be used.

Tests could consist of:

  • A blood examination. Your doctor may request blood tests to count the red, white, and platelet cells as well as check for any unexpected changes in the size, shape, and appearance of different blood cells.
  • The removal of bone marrow for analysis. A little amount of liquid bone marrow is removed (aspirated) during a bone marrow biopsy and aspiration, typically from a location on the back of your hipbone. Then a tiny portion of bone is removed together with its marrow (biopsy).

How does one prepare for the test?

No preparation is needed.

Required Documents for:

  • A doctor's prescription
  • A valid government ID
