A paranasal sinuses (PNS) MRI generates an image of the four pairs of air-filled gaps that surround the nasal cavity, pituitary gland, and soft tissues.

Why is it done?

The doctor will recommend that you do this test to detect the intracranial expansion of the sinonasal region due to infection or swelling. Additionally, the exam will determine whether you are suffering from sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) or paranasal malignancy.

What is the procedure for the PNS Tomography Test?

The MRI radiologist will explain.

How does one prepare for the test?

  • Notify your technician of any metallic implants such as surgical staples, clips, or pacemakers. You may also need to remove metal objects such as jewelry or metal watches.
  • If you are pregnant, notify your technician, as radiation may harm the baby.

FAQ

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) PNS (paranasal sinus) creates pictures of the sinuses. Sinuses are the air filled spaces present around the nasal cavity, pituitary gland and soft tissues.

PNS in MRI stands for para nasal sinuses. A  PNS MRI scan uses radio waves and strong magnets to create a magnetic field that helps in producing detailed scan images of the para nasal sinuses.

A PNS scan is done to detect and diagnose any infection or diseases related to the paranasal sinuses. These sinuses are the air filled spaces in the facial bone that are present in relation to the nasal cavities, soft tissues and  pituitary gland.

There is no fixed price for PNS MRI scan. It varies according to the technology used, credibility of  the diagnostic centre, your insurance coverage and other factors. It might generally cost you between 6000-15000 INR.

A magnetic resonance imaging of paranasal sinus (MRI PNS) scan is a painless, accurate and non-invasive technology that uses radio waves and magnetism to create the pictures of paranasal sinus that helps in determining certain PNS related diseases or infections.

A CT scan is usually preferred in case of an emergency. An MRI PNS is a little less effective in showing details and anatomy of the sinuses, and their suspected infections.

There can be side effects due to contrast agent:

  • Nausea vomiting
  • Skin rash
  • Itchind, burning and redness in skin
  • Headache or feeling dizzy
  • Lightheadedness etc

Side effects due to magnetism:

  • Magnets might alter the functioning of implanted devices such as cardiac pacemakers, artificial valves etc.
  • Due to strong magnets, a strong magnetic field is created that might cause certain metal items or pieces to run on certain velocity while the scanner is on, that may become the cause of physical injury to you and the MRI scan machine.

Normal paranasal sinuses MRI images show 4 paired air-filled spaces with no evidence of damage infection or diseases.

The paranasal sinuses usually are 4 pairs.

Functions of paranasal sinuses:

  • Reducing the weight of the head
  • Humidification
  • Aid in voice resonance.
