What Is MRI Brain Epilepsy Protocol?

MRI brain Epilepsy protocol involves following parameters and planning-

T1

  • Sequence:  Evaluation of brain is done in axial and coronal position or isotropic acquisition 
Purpose

To evaluate the brain anatomy and morphology

Measures cortical thickness and checks the grey-white matter differentiation

Visualize unusual location of grey matter as in grey matter heterotopias

Flair

Sequence: Study should be done in axial and angled coronal scans

Purpose

To evaluate the cortical or sub cortical hyperintensities where deep grey matter is also involved

SWI or T2

Axial/ Flair/coronal oblique 2mm/ TSE/ Flair axial oblique hippocampus/ flair sagittal hippocampus 2mm SFOV

Purpose

Evaluate the presence of product of hemoglobin breakdown as in post traumatic bleed and cavenomas.

DWI/ ADC

Double inversion recovery sequence (DIR)

Sequence- 3D isotropic acquisition

Why It Is Done?

An epilepsy protocol MRI is done in patients with the following indications-

Onset of generalized or unclassified seizures 

Difficulty in controlling seizure even after taking medicines.

Loss of seizure control, or a change in the pattern of seizures

Onset of partial seizures at any age

Procedure

While undergoing an MRI, patient is placed on a table that slides into a big, cylindrical MRI machine. To guarantee clear images, it's crucial to stay motionless during the scan. In most cases, the scan takes 45 to 90 minutes.

It's normal to hear loud banging or clicking noises during the procedure. In case of irritation with the loud noise of MRI machine patient may be given earplugs to reduce the noise.

How To Prepare for Epilepsy Protocol?

There are no restrictions before the MRI scanning, you can eat or drink prior to the scan. 

MRI is a magnetic machine that interacts with metals and interferes with obtained images. That’s why patient is asked to remove the metallic object prior to scan like- Body piercing, pens, jewelry. Hairpin, pins, zippers or any metal objects in the cloth, glasses or remove dental prosthesis.

Aftercare
