A brain MRI Scan is a diagnostic procedure that creates a picture of the brain bones (cranium), veins/arteries, cranial nerves, grey/white matter and surrounding soft tissues. Doctors use MRI angiography to diagnose and treat blood vessels related diseases.

What is MR Angiography (MRA) Brain?

Magnetic resonance Angiography (MRA) is a powerful diagnostic technique which uses magnetic fields, radio frequency waves and a computer used to evaluate the blood vessels and help in identifying abnormalities.

A MRA scan may or may not use contrast material.

What are the Uses of the MRA Brain?

MRA brain is used for:-

  • To identify the area of the brain's soft tissues—such as its ligaments, cartilages, tendons, and muscles—that is damaged.
  • To diagnose joint dislocation and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  • To identify the existence of a brain tumour, brain haemorrhage, aneurysm (bulge in the brain blood vessels), and stroke.
  • To learn about conditions related to the brain, such as multiple sclerosis (long-term damage to nerve cells) and acoustic neuromas (vestibular seizures, headaches, etc.).

It may be used to diagnose or evaluate conditions such as:

  • Arterial aneurysm (an abnormal widening or ballooning of a part of an artery due to weakness in the wall of the blood vessel)
  • Aortic coarctation
  • Aortic dissection
  • Stroke
  • Carotid artery disease
  • Atherosclerosis of the arms or legs
  • Heart disease, including congenital heart disease
  • Mesenteric artery ischemia
  • Renal artery stenosis (narrowing of the blood vessels in the kidneys)

How is the MRA Brain Test Performed?

Your healthcare provider may ask you to change in a hospital gown.

After that, the patient needs to lie down on an examination table that slides into a big scanner that resembles a tunnel.

Certain tests call for a specific dye (contrast). The dye is typically administered via an IV in your hand or forearm prior to the test. The radiologist can see specific areas more clearly.

The MRI operator will monitor you from a separate room during the procedure. The exam might take an hour or longer.

How to Prepare for the Test?

Patients are advised not to eat or drink anything for 4 to 6 hours before the scan.

Patients need to inform their healthcare provider who are afraid of close spaces (have claustrophobia).

MRI contains strong magnets, metal objects are not a allowed into the room with MRI scanner Avoid carrying items like:-

  • Pens
  • Eyeglasses
  • Watches
  • Jewellery
  • Hearing aids
  • Hairpins
  • Clothes with metal zipper and studs
  • Removal dental implants

Before the test, tell your provider if you have:

  • Brain aneurysm clips
  • Artificial heart valve
  • Heart defibrillator or pacemaker
  • Inner ear (cochlear) implants
  • Insulin pump or chemotherapy port
  • Intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Kidney disease or dialysis (you may not be able to receive contrast)
  • Neurostimulator
  • Recently placed artificial joints
  • Vascular stent
  • Worked with sheet metal in the past (you may need tests to check for tiny metal pieces in your eyes)

Aftercare

No special care is required. Patients may need to observe after a scan for a few hours.

Contrast agent injections via IV may occasionally be administered prior to image acquisition. You might feel uncomfortable after using the IV needle, and you might get bruises. Additionally, there is a very slim possibility that the IV tube insertion site will cause skin irritation. Following the contrast injection, a metallic aftertaste may occur in some patients.

There is no need for a recovery period if sedation is not required. After the exam, you can get back to your regular routine and diet right away. A small number of patients very infrequently have adverse reactions to the contrast agent. These could include headaches, nausea, and injection site pain. Seldom do patients report having itchy eyes, hives, or other

When Will I Get My Results of Mra Brain?

Radiologist will analyse and interpret the obtained images and the result will be shared within 48 hours.
