This assay is used in patients receiving different anticonvulsant medications that interact pharmacokinetically with lamotrigine to track blood levels, evaluate compliance, and modify dosage.

What is Lamotrigine Test?

In patients receiving other anticonvulsant drugs that interact pharmacokinetically with lamotrigine, the lamotrigine blood test is used to monitor serum concentrations of lamotrigine, assess compliance, and adjust lamotrigine dose.

Lamotrigine, an antiepileptic medication (AED) of the phenothiazine class, differs chemically from other AEDs currently on the market. Although the exact mechanism of action is uncertain, it has been hypothesized that lamotrigine blocks voltage-sensitive sodium channels, stabilizing neuronal membranes and subsequently controlling the release of excitatory amino acids from presynaptic transmitters. After oral administration, peak plasma concentration happens 1.4 to 4.8 hours later. The range of the elimination half-life is 12 to 70 hours. When valproic acid therapy is administered concurrently, patients show extended half-lives. Lamotrigine has a relatively high absorption when taken orally (around 98%). It also reduces with concurrent administration of phenytoin or carbamazepine (13–14 hours). Dizziness, ataxia, double or blurred vision, nausea, and vomiting are typical negative symptoms.

Other Names:

Lamictal

Why is this examination suggested?

Clinicians use the lamotrigine test to monitor lamotrigine levels in the serum and to assess patient compliance. When a patient is taking another anticonvulsant medication that has pharmacokinetic interactions with lamotrigine, the serum concentration can be used to modify the dose of lamotrigine. Additionally, trigeminal neuralgia, treatment-resistant depression, and migraines may all be treated with it.

What does the Lamotrigine Blood Level Test Result Mean?

Here's why the Lamotrigine Blood Level Test is important: Lamotrigine toxicity, is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Breathing depression
  • Suffering Coma
  • Distorted vision

Low levels of lamotrigine could mean that more is needed to get a therapeutic dose.
