What is KRAS Mutation?

KRAS pathway is involved in the initiation of a number of pathways, which regulate cell growth, cell division, cell survival, and cell death

KRAS is the most common proto-oncogene. The highest rate of mutation among all cancers is of KRAS gene.

Why is KRAS Mutation Test Done? What is the Use of this test?

It is seen that the KRAS is mutated in about 15% to 20% of human cancers, mostly seen in pancreatic cancer, the colon cancer and in lung cancers as well as in leukemia.

In approximately 30% to 40% of the colon cancers and about 15% to 30% of the lung cancers might have KRAS mutations.

Currently, it must be noted that the drugs that target the EGFR and are used to treat colon cancer and non-small cell lung cancer.

KRAS mutation testing will be used to determine whether these corresponding drugs would be effective in treating these cancers successfully.

When Should You Get Tested?

When the patient has colon cancer that has spread to different parts of the body (metastatic) or in case of non-small cell lung cancer.

What Sample Is Collected for Kras Mutation PCR?

Following samples are collected for KRAS mutation PCR:

  • Blood
  • Biopsy tissue sample

How is KRAS Mutation Detected by PCR?

Real Time PCR :

KRAS mutation transcripts are identified in the laboratory using a Real Time PCR machine, operated by a skilled technician. 22 different mutations in it .It is seen that the KRAS gene can be identified in a single run itself.

How to Prepare for KRAS Mutation PCR Test?

There is no specific preparation required for KRAS mutation PCR. Let your healthcare professional know about the following:

  • Medical history
  • Medication
  • Family history

Report :

  • Report is available within 24 hours of sample collection.
  • Report is available digitally.
  • 100% accurate reports

This test is useful in the detection of the  specific mutations in the KRAS gene in DNA of cancer cells and the tissue.

The presence of these mutations might further indicate that there are certain drugs that would not be effective in treating the cancer.

KRAS is a short form for the gene: Kirsten rat sarcoma viral

Procedure for KRAS

Blood Test

  • 2ml blood sample would be taken from your arm vein using the hold of a tight rubber band
  • Once, the sample has been received by the doctor, it would be further be analyzed for the result. In case, the result is positive- there would be a display of the mutated oncogene
  • Some medical laboratories perform KRAS mutation testing on the tumor tissue and on bone marrow and also the blood.

Note: The research has evaluated the role of the KRAS mutations in treatment response. It has been to be based solely on tumor testing.

Therefore, the preferred sample for the KRAS testing is considered to be tumor tissue even though blood tests may be conducted

Biospy

Usually, the testing is performed on tumor tissue removed from the patient during a previous surgery or biopsy procedure. Typically, patients undergoing KRAS testing are those with high-stage tumors that require adjuvant therapy.

Using Bone Marrow Aspiration

Detect mononuclear cells in the bone marrow sample, if KRAS mutation gene is present in the patient’s body.

What Is the Cost of KRAS Mutation PCR Test?

The cost of this test varies from lab to lab. The best place to get this test done is Ganesh Diagnostic and Imaging Centre. The cost is reasonable and you can also avail FLAT 50% discount.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ

KRAS mutations are detected in the following types of cancers:

  • Lung cancer (NSCLC)
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma
  • Acute Myeloid Leukemia
  • Cholangiocarcinoma

There is no risk associated with non-invasive sample collection such as blood sample. In case, biopsy of tissue is required, your doctor will let you know about the procedure.

It means that you have a spontaneous mutation in KRAS gene. This is an indication towards uncontrolled cell growth and division in the body. The mutation occurs in somatic cells.

FDA approved drug Sotorasib is used for treating NSCLC.
