What is Intrinsic Factor Antibodies Test?

Intrinsic factor antibodies are immune system proteins that are linked to pernicious anaemia. This test detects the presence of intrinsic factor antibody (IF antibody) in the blood.

Intrinsic factor is a protein produced by parietal cells, which are specialised cells that line the stomach wall. Stomach acids release vitamin B12 from food and bind to intrinsic factor to form a complex during digestion. This complex must be formed in order for vitamin B12 to be absorbed in the small intestine.
