What is an INR (International Normalized Ratio) Test?

An INR test determines how long it takes for blood to clot. It is also referred to as prothrombin time, or PT. It is used to track blood-thinning medications, also known as anticoagulants. The INR, or international normalised ratio, can also be used to determine whether you have a clotting disorder.

A prothrombin time (PT) test determines how long it takes for a blood clot to form in a sample of blood. An INR (international normalised ratio) is a calculation based on the results of a PT test.
