Immunoglobulin D (IgD), Serum Test Cost & Prcocedure

This test is done to estimate the levels of IgD in your blood.

It helps detect underlying disorders like multiple myeloma-and hyperimmunoglobulinemia IgD syndrome.

What are Immunoglobulins?

These are glycoproteins produced by blood cells in answer to an allergen.

It has two types of chains:

• Heavy chain
• Light Chain

It has delta-heavy chains and is found on the B Cells' surfaces.

The altered levels of IgD can indicate

• Autoimmune diseases
• Chronic Infection
• Multiple myeloma
• Viral hepatitis
• Hereditary deficiency
• Monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance

What is Multiple Myeloma?

Plasma cells are trapped by cancer in this condition.

These affected plasma cells lump in the bone marrow and lead to the production of abnormal proteins.

Symptoms seen in multiple myeloma are

• Loss of appetite
• Loss of weight
• Constipation
• Bone pain
• Nausea
• Confusion
• Weakness
• Excessive thirst

Hyper-IgD Syndrome

It is an autosomal disorder. Recurrent fevers and chills mark it. In this syndrome, the body experiences swelling. It is commonly known as HIDS.

Symptoms seen in Hyper-IgD syndrome are

• Rash
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Fever
• Joint Pain
• Abdominal pain

Why is this test performed?

The immunoglobulin tests estimate the antibody levels in your blood. These help in fighting various bacteria and viruses. The following are the types of immunoglobulins:

>>IgD

• Present only in traces
• It helps in fighting against allergies.

>>IgG

• Protects against bacteria and virus

>>IgE

• Found in traces but can increase allergies.

>>IgA

• Found in the respiratory tract lining.

>>IgM

• Found in lymph nodes and blood

Requirements for the test

No special preparation is needed. It's a routine blood test.

The procedure of this test

In the case of a blood sample

• A needle is pricked into the arm
• The blood is withdrawn.

In the case of cerebrospinal Fluid

• First, the site will be anesthetised.
• The needle is inserted in vertebrae
• The CSF is excavated from it.
