Hypercalcemia (High Calcium) is a condition caused by an electrolyte imbalance that manifests as an excess of calcium in the blood. & The typical calcium level in adults is 8.5-10.2 mg/dL.

Cancer cells that spread to the bone can emit compounds that trigger osteoclasts, which are located in the bone, to disintegrate or "eat away" at a section of the bone. These tumours or lesions cause bone deterioration and can result in problems. This bone breakdown complication includes bone pain, fractures, and, less frequently, hypercalcemia.

Why done?

Symptoms of hypercalcemia include the following:

  • Mild hypercalcemia may be asymptomatic. However, moderate increases in blood calcium levels may cause nausea, decreased appetite, vomiting, and constipation.
  • Moderately elevated calcium levels may result in weariness or extreme tiredness. Additionally, irregular heart rhythms, increased urine frequency, and kidney stones may be present.
  • Patients with elevated levels of hypercalcemia may experience twitching of the muscles, anxiety, depression, personality changes, and bewilderment.
  • Excessive drowsiness, unconsciousness, and even death may occur at very high levels of hypercalcemia.
  • • The severity of hypercalcemia symptoms is dependent not only on the serum calcium level but also on the rate at which it has increased.
