Human Papillomavirus HPV Infection

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a viral infection caused by the human papillomavirus, a group of more than 150 related viruses. It is a sexually transmitted infection that can affect both male and female, and it is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide. HPV infections are typically transmitted through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activities, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. HPV can also be transmitted from mother to baby during childbirth, and in rare cases, through non-sexual contact with contaminated surfaces, such as towels or bedding.

Symptoms of HPV infection may include genital warts, which are small, flesh-colored or gray bumps that may be raised or flat, and may appear on the genitals, anus, or mouth. However, many people with HPV infection do not develop visible warts and may not have any symptoms, which makes it important to undergo regular screenings, such as Pap tests for cervical cancer, as recommended by healthcare providers.

Diagnosis of HPV infection is typically based on clinical evaluation and may involve visual inspection of the genital area for visible warts, and/or molecular testing, such as HPV DNA testing, to detect the presence of the virus in samples collected from the affected area.
