Human Metapneumovirus Infection

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection is a respiratory viral infection caused by the human metapneumovirus, which is a member of the Paramyxoviridae family. It was first identified in 2001 and is known to cause respiratory tract infections, particularly in young children, elderly individuals, and people with weakened immune systems.

HMPV infection typically presents with symptoms similar to those of other respiratory viral infections, including cold-like symptoms such as cough, runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, and congestion. In some cases, it can also cause more severe respiratory symptoms, such as bronchitis, bronchiolitis, or pneumonia, particularly in vulnerable populations such as infants, young children, and older adults.

HMPV is primarily spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also be spread through direct contact with contaminated surfaces or objects. The virus can survive on surfaces for several hours, making it easy to spread in crowded environments or through close contact with infected individuals.

Diagnosis of HMPV infection is typically based on clinical evaluation and may include laboratory testing, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or antigen testing, to detect the presence of the virus in respiratory samples, such as nasal swabs or throat swabs.
