Hookworm Infection

Hookworm infection, also known as ancylostomiasis or necatoriasis, is a parasitic infection caused by hookworms Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus. These parasitic worms primarily infect the small intestine of humans and can cause a range of symptoms and health problems.

Hookworm infection is usually acquired by walking barefoot on soil contaminated with the larvae of the hookworms. The larvae can penetrate the skin of the feet, and then migrate through the bloodstream to the lungs and eventually to the small intestine, where they mature into adult worms. In some cases, hookworm infection can also be transmitted by ingestion of larvae-contaminated food or water, or by direct skin contact with larvae-contaminated soil.

Symptoms of hookworm infection can vary depending on the severity of the infection and the age and health status of the affected individual. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, anemia, and loss of appetite. Severe cases of hookworm infection can lead to chronic blood loss, iron deficiency anemia, and protein deficiency, which can result in weakness, fatigue, pale skin, and other complications.

Diagnosis of hookworm infection is typically based on a combination of clinical evaluation, medical history, and laboratory tests. Laboratory tests may include stool examinations to identify hookworm eggs or larvae, and blood tests to assess for anemia and other related abnormalities.
