HLA typing examines specific aspects of the immune system. If someone can safely give bone marrow, cord blood, or an organ to someone in need of a transplant, the test can assist in determining whether they can do so.

Why Take a Test?

Testing is often only carried out when a transplant is scheduled and you are either the intended recipient of the transplant or a potential donor. Testing can also be performed to identify which platelet donors have the same HLA antigen types as the recipients of transfusions.

When Will you Be Tested?

• When a solid organ transplant or hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplant is necessary, transplant recipients are typically examined.
• Before undergoing a transplant, potential donors undergo testing when they are considered compatible with a particular recipient or when they register with a national donor registry.
• Due to the presence of HLA antibodies, some patients who require platelet transfusions do not show an increase in their platelet count.
• Blood donors for platelets are HLA-antigen-matched to the receiver to enhance the platelet response.

Sample Necessary:

• A blood sample is taken from a vein in your arm; occasionally, a cheek swab is used for HLA typing (buccal swab)

Preparation for the HLA Typing AB Test:

• There are multiple heritable HLA markers in the human body.
• There is a 1 in 4 chance that any sibling of yours who shares the same guardians as you is a nearby HLA coordinate.
• Initial exam preparation is not a requirement.
• You can get a buccal swab or a blood test. As usual, eat and drink.
• Tell the therapist about any present or historical medical conditions, sensitivities, or recurring medications you take.
• By your situation, the doctor may offer you specific directions; heed them.

Procedure:

• For organ transplantation and bone marrow, high-resolution typing, also known as HLA or Human Leukocyte Antigen, is carried out using the HLA A and B, HLA-DR, and HLA-DQ antigens.
